In 1860 Senator Luigi Gravina donated to the Scammacca family 30 hectares of vineyards on the eastern slope of Etna, the same on which today stands Tenuta San Michele, the heart of Murgo Winery. The estate, located 500 m above sea level, is nestled in an enchanting setting between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, surrounded by Etna's native vineyards.
A little more than a century later, Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo began the process of converting the estate into the modern farm. In 1981 the first Murgo bottle was bottled and labeled by hand: the 1980 vintage Etna Rosso. After three years of aging on the lees, the first Murgo Brut spumante is ready in 1990: made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes, it was by far the first sparkling wine produced from this varietal.
